about

FRANÇAIS À LA SUITE...

Mick V. was born in 1957, in Mont-Joli, Québec, Canada, into a family in which music occupied a large place. A seasoned, introspective and creative musician, he was introduced to the drums in 1970 and to the piano in 1974, engaging immediately in jazz improvisation in all its forms.

For a few years, he performed on stage with the group Délima, one of whose members was René Dupéré, the composer and arranger for the Cirque du Soleil (Alegría). During this period, Mick V. participated in the Chant’août, the Festival d’été de Québec and college shows.

From time to time, he still works, on various projects, with Michel LaRoche (bass) and Richard DePaul, Les Productions RDP (saxophone, keyboard and mastering).

Mick V. learned to master his instrumental art at Laval and Concordia universities, and with renowned musicians, including classical piano accompanist Marc Durand.

But a large part of his musical knowledge has been acquired through personal exploration, which has allowed him to develop a style all his own.

Strongly attracted to film music, he registered, in 1981, at the Berklee College of Music, in Boston, where he studied and perfected arranging techniques in that area.

During the 1980s, he worked with several groups, was active in the recording studio and accompanied singer-songwriter Martin Lavoie on the piano.

For over 10 years, from 1990 to 2003, Mick V. rounded out his knowledge as a composer by playing with numerous jazz musicians in Québec City. In 1996, he formed the group Touba, with guitarist Christian Genest and bassist René Gignac. He restructured the group in 2003, with saxophonist André Larue (Prix Oliver-Jones). Touba became a fixture of the Québec City cultural scene, performing on various stages, with contributions by a multitude of handpicked musicians.

In 2010, while continuing to explore various sound horizons through professional music software, he was invited by Christian Thomas, of Octoma studio in Montréal, to collaborate on music specifically for the theatre, including projects for the Théâtre du Rideau Vert and La Compagnie Jean Duceppe.

Subsequently, the doors of the web were opened to him by Intermède Média, with the “Profile” series of pieces for its electronic media catalogue.

The only rule in Mick V.’s world is “Play the now”: evoke the present moment with its own special colours, reaching beyond the constraints of structure.

“In this way, through any instrument of choice, creation transcends boundaries and reflects the language of the soul.”

-------------------------------------------------------------

« Play the now ».

Mick V. Québec

Self-taught old school, with three hairs on my head that probably give me away...persevering, passionate, drummer, keyboardist, an approach unfettered by boundaries and constraints. A call to open, responsive polyphony.
